HealthLink Book Review: Mayo Clinic Book of Alternative Medicine

Mayo Clinic Book of Alternative Medicine: the new approach to using the best of natural therapies and conventional medicine

Medical editor: Brent Bauer

These days people are taking a greater interest in their own health instead of leaving it solely in the hands of their doctors. Whether for existing medical conditions or for preventative health, consumers are looking to educate themselves about prescription meds, vitamins and nutrition, and alternative therapies. While there are many books that deal with these topics separately, the Mayo Clinic Book of Alternative Medicine combines and compares traditional and alternative therapies and discusses how blending treatments can "treat the whole person". The book is sectioned into three parts: an overview of integrative medicine; descriptions of alternative therapies such as hypnosis, pilates, reflexology and traditional Chinese medicine; and treating common ailments, such as arthritis, memory problems and PMS with blended treatments. Straight-forward answers from doctors and specialists make this book easy to understand, and the bright, glossy pictures make it pleasurable to read.
